On Nov. 14, students, staff and families at Manitou Park Elementary teamed up with the City of Tacoma's Safe Routes to School program to celebrate Tacoma's inaugural Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. In 1960, six-year-old Bridges became one of the first Black children to integrate an all-white school in New Orleans. The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day event commemorates Bridges' brave walk to school as she faced angry mobs and threats of violence.
Students led a walking parade around Manitou Park and along the way learned about Ruby Bridges' legacy. Tacoma Schools Board Director Lisa Keating and City of Tacoma Councilmember Joe Bushnell joined the event and talked with students about the power they have to be change-makers and leaders in their schools and communities.
